On this day in 1922, the British Broadcasting Company (BBC) made its first-ever radio transmission from London, marking the beginning of public broadcasting in the United Kingdom. While experimental radio had existed, this was the first authorized daily service. The initial broadcast, under the call sign 2LO, consisted of a news bulletin read twice—once slowly and once quickly—followed by a weather forecast. This modest start grew rapidly. Just two weeks later, the BBC began its famous children's programming with "Children's Hour," and within a month, it was broadcasting daily across the country. The BBC was formally established as a public corporation in 1927, tasked with providing information, education, and entertainment. This single transmission transformed British culture, creating a shared national experience and setting a global standard for public service broadcasting. Editor: Jey Em
